Notes:
This outstanding antique tribal saddlebag is a beautifully woven example of early 20th-century nomadic craftsmanship, preserved in exceptional condition. The front panel displays an elegant lattice design composed of dozens of small diamond compartments, each enclosing stylized star and rosette motifs. The highly organized geometric field creates a striking visual rhythm while showcasing the weaver's precision and artistic skill.
The rich indigo-blue ground is enlivened by shades of rose, ivory, camel, soft brown, and light blue, producing a sophisticated palette that has mellowed beautifully with age. Surrounding the field are multiple finely drawn borders featuring stylized vine and geometric motifs, while the original braided loops and closure elements remain intact along the upper edge, adding greatly to the piece's authenticity and decorative appeal.
The reverse retains its original plain flatwoven panel in a warm rose-red tone, demonstrating the traditional construction of a true nomadic storage and transport bag. The combination of intricate pile weaving on the face and simple utilitarian weaving on the back reflects the practical needs and artistic traditions of tribal life.
Why It Is Special
What makes this saddlebag particularly desirable is the extraordinary refinement of its lattice design and the rarity of finding such a complete example in virtually untouched condition. The field of countless diamond compartments filled with colorful stars creates an almost jewel-like appearance, while the crisp drawing and balanced composition reveal the work of a highly skilled tribal weaver. The original loops, braided edges, and complete construction survive intact, a feature seldom encountered in nineteenth-century tribal bags.
This is the type of piece that appeals not only to collectors of tribal textiles but also to those who appreciate geometric design and exceptional craftsmanship. Its combination of rarity, condition, strong natural colors, and sophisticated drawing elevates it well above the average nomadic saddlebag and makes it a highly decorative and collectible example of tribal weaving art.
