Notes:
This outstanding antique Persian Sarouk Feraghan rug, measuring approximately 3'4" x 5'2" and dating to around 1880, is a beautiful and highly collectible example of late 19th century Western Persian weaving. The rug combines the refinement and elegance associated with Feraghan craftsmanship together with the rich decorative character that has made antique Sarouk Feraghan rugs so admired among collectors and sophisticated interior designers.
The composition is centered around an elongated geometric floral medallion set upon a luminous ivory field densely populated with finely drawn vines, blossoms, palmettes, and delicate angular floral motifs. The drawing possesses remarkable clarity and balance, reflecting the artistic discipline and refined village craftsmanship characteristic of the finest antique Feraghan weavings of the late 19th century.
Particularly striking is the rug’s elegant color palette, featuring warm ivory, rich madder red, soft rose, coral, deep navy, pale sky blue, muted celadon, and touches of walnut brown. The natural vegetable dyes have mellowed beautifully over time, creating the soft, harmonious coloration so highly prized in genuine 19th century Persian rugs.
The border system is exceptionally well balanced, framed by richly ornamented geometric floral borders that complement the field beautifully without overpowering the central composition. The rug also displays the subtle geometric interpretation of floral forms that distinguishes Feraghan rugs from more curvilinear urban Persian carpets, giving the piece both sophistication and tribal vitality.
The back reveals a finely woven and supple wool foundation indicative of quality craftsmanship and authentic age. The rug appears to be in good condition for a carpet dating to the 1880s, with wear consistent with age and use while still maintaining strong decorative presentation and integrity.
Because of its authentic 19th century age, highly decorative ivory field, desirable small room size, refined drawing, and collectible Feraghan character, this rug would reasonably carry a retail value in today’s market in the range of approximately $6,500 – $11,000 retail, with especially strong appeal to collectors seeking genuine late 19th century Persian village rugs with soft natural coloration and elegant proportions.
