This extraordinary antique Persian Feraghan, woven circa 1870, is an exceptional collector's rug distinguished by its remarkable fineness, unusual artistic design, and superb state of preservation. Representing the golden age of Feraghan weaving, it is a rare example of the creativity and technical mastery that made these carpets among the most admired of all 19th-century Persian rugs.
The dramatic midnight navy field is filled with an exceptionally intricate all-over lattice of Herati motifs, creating a rich tapestry of finely drawn geometric flowers, rosettes, and curling leaves. Dominating the composition is a highly unusual cruciform medallion with elongated pendants in ivory, coral, olive, and soft salmon tones. This striking centerpiece is unlike the more common Feraghan medallions, making the rug particularly distinctive and highly collectible.
The spacious navy field surrounding the medallion creates a wonderful sense of depth while allowing the extraordinary precision of the intricate pattern to stand out. Olive-green corner spandrels soften the composition, while the broad brick-red main border, decorated with stylized palmettes, vinery, and angular floral motifs, provides a bold and elegant frame. Multiple finely woven guard borders complete the composition with exceptional balance.
The color palette is rich and sophisticated, featuring deep indigo, madder red, coral, ivory, olive green, camel, soft blue, and warm brown, all beautifully mellowed through more than 150 years of natural aging. The high-grade wool possesses the silky handle and subtle sheen that characterize the finest Feraghan production.
This rug is woven with an exceptionally fine knot count and remarkable precision, displaying crisp drawing and outstanding clarity throughout. Its very good original condition is particularly impressive for a carpet of this age, with a healthy pile, well-preserved borders, and strong, vibrant colors that greatly enhance both its decorative appeal and investment quality.
