This beautiful antique Persian Bijar rug, measuring approximately 3'8" x 4'10" and dating to around 1920, is an excellent example of the highly respected weaving traditions of Bijar in Western Persia. Often referred to as the “Iron Rugs of Persia,” Bijars are celebrated for their extraordinarily durable construction, dense weave, and powerful geometric interpretation of classical Persian floral designs.
This particular example displays a striking and highly artistic drawing centered around a bold navy medallion set against a rich coral-red field. The composition is filled with angular floral motifs, stylized vines, and geometric ornamentation rendered with remarkable clarity and balance. The crisp ivory lattice-like framework surrounding the medallion creates strong architectural structure and gives the rug a dramatic visual presence.
The color palette is especially vibrant and attractive, featuring saturated shades of deep navy blue, coral red, ivory, sky blue, soft camel, olive green, and touches of chocolate brown. The combination of strong contrast and luminous vegetable-dye coloration gives the rug tremendous decorative impact while maintaining the authenticity and character expected from fine antique Bijar weavings.
The borders are beautifully executed with classic geometric floral motifs and maintain excellent harmony with the central field. The back reveals a very tightly woven and compact structure, characteristic of high-quality Bijar craftsmanship.
The rug appears to be in excellent condition with full pile throughout, which is increasingly uncommon for antique Bijars of this age. Its fine weave, strong color retention, crisp drawing, and outstanding state of preservation make it particularly desirable for both collectors and sophisticated interior settings.
