This is a particularly lively and unusual example. The field is organized around large, strongly drawn geometric floral forms in alternating areas of clear blue, soft salmon/coral, and dark brown-black, surrounded by numerous small rosettes, angular floral devices, and archaic-looking ornaments. The drawing has the spontaneous, almost playful quality that makes good early Caucasian village rugs so appealing. The color combination is one of its strongest features. Brilliant blues, coral and salmon, deep red, ivory, soft green, yellow, and dark brown create a remarkably vibrant composition. The large blue areas are especially attractive and give the rug considerably more presence than its relatively small size would suggest. The bold ivory outer border with repeating angular hooked devices is particularly effective and gives the rug a powerful graphic frame. Inside it, the red secondary border contains alternating geometric floral elements, adding another layer of color and detail. The combination of field and border is unusual enough that I would emphasize the rug's individuality rather than describe it simply as a standard commercial Seychour pattern. From the reverse photograph, the rug shows good-quality, compact hand knotting and convincing age. There is some oxidation and age-related wear visible, particularly in the darker areas, but overall I would describe the rug as being in good condition for its approximately 140-year age.
