Notes:
This exceptional antique Persian Isfahan rug, woven circa 1880, is a rare and highly decorative example of nineteenth-century Persian artistry. Distinguished by its remarkably fine weave, elegant proportions, and uncommon design, it represents the refined craftsmanship for which early Isfahan carpets are admired. Rugs of this age and quality are seldom encountered, particularly in such well-preserved condition.
The soft ivory field is beautifully composed around a series of intricately drawn floral medallions and scrolling arabesques, creating a graceful vertical composition rather than a single dominant centerpiece. Delicate flowering vines, palmettes, and stylized blossoms fill the field with extraordinary precision, while richly ornamented corner spandrels in deep navy and warm camel provide dramatic contrast and architectural balance.
A striking feature of this rug is its magnificent border system. The broad ivory main border, decorated with alternating jewel-like cartouches and palmettes in sapphire blue, coral red, ivory, and soft gold, is framed by multiple finely executed guard borders. The crisp drawing and vibrant colors create an elegant frame that perfectly complements the refined field design.
The palette is exceptionally harmonious, combining soft ivory, deep indigo, sapphire blue, coral red, terracotta, camel, and muted celadon green. The colors, produced from high-quality natural vegetable dyes, have mellowed beautifully over nearly a century and a half while retaining remarkable brilliance and depth.
Woven with exceptionally fine, lustrous wool and an unusually high knot count, the rug displays extraordinary precision and clarity throughout. Every floral motif and arabesque is rendered with remarkable detail, reflecting the skill of master weavers working during one of Persia's finest weaving periods.
The rug remains in very good to excellent original condition, retaining a healthy, even pile, crisp drawing, and beautifully preserved colors. Its exceptional state of preservation, combined with its uncommon design and superior craftsmanship, makes it equally suitable for a serious collector or as a centerpiece in an elegant interior.
