Notes:
This is an exceptionally fine and highly decorative antique Shirvan Caucasian prayer rug, most likely Kuba/Konagkend influenced or related Northeast Caucasian village weaving from the late 19th century, circa 1880–1900. The rug displays an unusual and sophisticated lattice design filled with stylized hooked and geometric floral motifs, enclosed within an elegant stepped prayer niche. The drawing is remarkably refined for a small-format Caucasian rug, with extraordinary precision and balance throughout the composition. The crisp ivory field creates dramatic contrast against the saturated reds, deep indigo blues, soft abrashed sky blues, and delicate rose and aubergine tones, all appearing to be derived from early natural vegetable dyes. The intricate border system, with its rhythmic angular motifs and finely articulated guard borders, further enhances the visual complexity and collector appeal of the piece. Caucasian rugs are especially admired for their bold geometric artistry and village character.
The overall aesthetic strongly suggests the weaving traditions associated with the Kuba-Konagkend region, known for very fine knotting, jewel-like color palettes, and highly detailed village designs. The stepped mihrab niche and symbolic tribal devices indicate a prayer format, while the repeated lattice motifs create a beautifully ordered architectural field rarely found in such a compact size. The rug is in exceptional, near-perfect condition, which is extremely uncommon for authentic Caucasian rugs of this age and fineness. The back reveals a very tight weave and excellent clarity, confirming the superior craftsmanship and high-quality wool foundation.
At only 2'6" x 4'7", this is a highly collectible small-format Caucasian rug — ideal for collectors of fine tribal weavings, sophisticated interior designers, or display in a curated textile collection. Pieces of this quality, refinement, and condition are increasingly difficult to find in today’s market.
