This beautiful late 19th-century Persian Qashqai rug is a superb example of the artistry and creativity of the nomadic Qashqai tribes. Finely woven with hand-spun wool and natural vegetable dyes, the rug displays a richly detailed allover geometric design set upon a deep midnight-blue field. The composition is filled with angular floral motifs, stylized birds, tribal symbols, and intricate geometric ornaments arranged around a striking ivory stepped medallion that serves as the visual focal point of the rug.
The color palette is exceptionally rich and harmonious, featuring deep indigo blue, ivory, brick red, terracotta, camel gold, sky blue, and soft brown accents. The numerous small tribal motifs and animated drawing give the rug remarkable visual energy while maintaining excellent balance and symmetry.
The multiple geometric borders are beautifully executed and frame the field with classic Qashqai elegance. Particularly attractive is the wide ivory and golden border that creates dramatic contrast against the dark field and highlights the precision of the tribal drawing.
Why It Is Special
What makes this rug especially desirable is its combination of early age, fine weave, excellent condition, and highly sophisticated tribal design. Unlike later commercial productions, this rug displays the spontaneous artistry and individuality that collectors seek in authentic 19th-century Qashqai weavings. The drawing is crisp, the colors remain vibrant, and the numerous tribal motifs reveal the imagination and cultural symbolism of the nomadic weavers.
The deep indigo field, beautifully articulated ivory medallion, and abundance of finely drawn geometric and floral elements create a piece that is both visually striking and historically important. Fine Qashqai rugs from the late 19th century in this size and condition have become increasingly difficult to acquire and remain among the most respected tribal weavings of Persia.
