Notes:
This exceptional antique Persian Mohtasham Kashan, woven circa 1870, is a beautiful example from the legendary Mohtasham workshop, whose carpets are regarded among the finest and most artistic Persian rugs produced during the nineteenth century. Combining superb craftsmanship, refined drawing, and an elegant palette, this rug exemplifies the timeless beauty for which early Mohtasham Kashans are renowned.
The ivory field is centered by an exquisitely drawn midnight navy floral medallion with delicate pendants, surrounded by an intricate network of scrolling arabesques, flowering vines, palmettes, and blossoming branches. Every motif is rendered with remarkable precision, creating a composition of exceptional elegance and balance.
The spacious ivory field is complemented by beautifully ornamented corner spandrels featuring floral arabesques in navy, soft rose, and light turquoise, adding depth and sophistication to the design. Surrounding the field is a richly decorated midnight navy main border filled with scrolling vinery, palmettes, lotus blossoms, and flowering stems, framed by multiple finely executed guard borders that complete the composition with remarkable harmony.
The color palette is refined and beautifully aged, featuring deep indigo, soft ivory, coral rose, sky blue, celadon green, warm camel, and subtle terracotta tones, all created from high-quality natural vegetable dyes that have developed a soft, luminous patina over more than 150 years.
The rug is woven with exceptionally fine, lustrous wool and displays the crisp drawing and silky handle that distinguish the finest Mohtasham Kashan carpets. It remains in good original condition, exhibiting honest, even wear entirely appropriate for a rug of this age. The gentle wear enhances its authenticity while preserving the beauty of the design and allowing the exceptional artistry to remain fully appreciated.
Early Mohtasham Kashans are among the most sought-after antique Persian rugs due to their superior workmanship, refined aesthetics, and increasing rarity. Well-preserved examples of this quality are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire.
