Amazing antique Turkish Oushak rug, circa 1930 in excellent condition. Measure: 5'4" x 7'8". Ushak rugs have been in production since the 15th century with superb wool and natural dyes. Unlike other Turkish rugs, Ushak rugs influenced after Persian rugs and the woven with Ghiordies knots and all double knotted, their design is feature intricate motifs of vines and leaves and typically based on geometric motifs. Oushak carpets are long-time favourites among admirers of antique Ottoman rugs. Originating in Turkish carpet weaving workshops, Oushak rugs were frequently represented in paintings by European masters, such as Vermeer and Velasquez, as well as used to adorn royal interiors. This superb example features sparse rows of characteristic medallions, with split leaves and blossoming tracery that spreads across the middle of the rug and buds out from the sides. The color scheme is subtle, light gold a taupe background that highlights pale peach, pink and light green decorations. The composition is symmetrical, with an ornate central medallion that is surrounded by stylized leaves, petals and floral sprays, which together creates a strong visual point of focus. The border boasts a series of frames, with a wide green band that enhances the pastoral theme.
