Notes:
This handsome antique Turkoman rug displays a classic tribal composition featuring eight well-drawn elephant-foot guls arranged in a balanced field. The rich palette of deep aubergine, burgundy, rose-red, soft pink, ivory, and dark brown creates the warm, saturated appearance collectors seek in older Turkoman weavings.
The border system is particularly attractive, consisting of multiple guard borders surrounding a main border filled with geometric rosettes and tribal ornaments. The field contains numerous small tribal motifs between the guls, adding visual interest and demonstrating the weaver's attention to detail.
The wool appears soft and lustrous, and the rug has aged beautifully, developing the mellow character associated with quality antique Turkoman rugs. The compact size makes it ideal as an accent rug, wall hanging, or collector's piece.
Attribution
Based on the gul drawing and border treatment, this piece appears most closely related to Ersari Turkoman weaving, although it may have been woven by a related Turkoman group in the early 20th century.
