Antique Caucasian Kazak Rug
Size: 4'1" x 7'
Origin: Southwest Caucasus
Date: Late 19th Century
Construction: Hand-knotted Goat wool on wool foundation.
This late 19th-century Caucasian Kazak rug presents a compelling and highly individual interpretation of classic tribal design, distinguished by its intentional asymmetry, expressive drawing, and richly aged palette.
The field is anchored by a sequence of large geometric medallions, each uniquely rendered and enclosed within bold, serrated outlines. Rather than strict repetition, the composition unfolds organically, reflecting the spontaneity of village weaving. Surrounding these central forms is a lively array of symbolic tribal motifs, including stylized human and animal figures, small crosses, rosettes, and protective devices—elements that lend the rug a narrative, almost pictographic quality.
The color palette is one of the rug’s most engaging attributes, combining warmth, depth, and visible age:
A dominant burnt orange to soft red field, rich yet mellowed over time
Expanses of camel and warm khaki tones, softened from their original deeper brown and aubergine hues, now carrying a beautiful patina
A wide ivory border, creating strong contrast and framing the composition with clarity
Accents of golden yellow, deep black, and touches of navy, adding definition and graphic strength
Natural abrash and subtle tonal variation are present throughout, enhancing the rug’s authenticity and visual movement. The contrast between the aged camel tones on the face and the deeper undertones visible in the foundation speaks to the use of natural dyes and genuine age.
Overall: Good antique condition
Structurally sound with even wear consistent with age
Noticeable corrosion in the brown areas, typical of 19th-century Caucasian rugs due to the nature of the dyes
Colors remain attractive, with a soft, time-earned patina
This is an honest, unaltered example, where age is visible and contributes to its character rather than detracting from it.
